Neutral Nursery



The neutral nursery is a creation of modern constructs in lighting, color, form, fit and function. When preparing a new nursery, each of these elements may be considered separately, and then blended together to make a whole. Properly created and merged, the aesthetic appeal of the whole will be greater than the sum of its parts, creating a wonderful place to enjoy the presence of a new member of the family!



While many think that altering an existing room in the house has to be an expense undertaking, the wily do-it-yourself home-maker knows that the entire room can be redone for less than the cost of a short trip and overnight stay out of town. With a little creativity and imagination, the room can be transformed form a sterile hospital white, or a mundane and ordinary beige room, into one where form weaves and colors intermingle themselves into an extraordinary place. But simplicity is the key to a room with lasting quality. Stay away from over-embellishing the room with unnecessary furniture and decorations. MORE IS LESS is a the mantra of the good decorator. As the baby becomes and child and grows, things can always be added, and most certainly will. But clean and simple lines throughout the room will help create a place of peace and serenity.

When preparing for a new baby, the major elements of neutralizing the room are light and color. But color is light, and color can be fascinating, but it needs to changing in order to stay interesting and beautiful. Otherwise, it quickly becomes boring. Think of bringing a baby boy home from the hospital into a room where everything is all the exact same shade of neutral brown: brown walls, brown carpet, brown furniture, brown curtains, brown decorations. Now, did you ever look at your favorite a painting and wonder what was marvelous about it? It was due in part to the various shades of color. They accentuate each other. They contrast, they pull, they push. A nursery that is gender neutral still needs color that is undulating, like the waves in the sea. But it must not undulate too much, lest the baby become seasick! Colors, even neutral ones, need to interact in order to cause beauty. So it is important not make everything the same neutral color.
